Lakeside FC 1 - 2 Ongar Town

So, a full 6 weeks since Ongar Town’s last match, due to all the rain before and over the Christmas period. The weather had caused havoc for the majority of teams but especially Ongar as they haven’t managed a game since their last outing against Hutton, in this very competition!

With Ongar now dropping to 4th in their respective league after missing so many games, they faced a strong, confident Lakeside team who had jumped above them in the league table standings. The game started brightly for the home side as Klessa Smith scored a very early goal lobbing Town Keeper Haymes from the half way line after a defensive error by skipper Chadwick, who presented Klessa Smith with the ball, which bounced up and with a well struck shot, it sailed over goal keeper Haymes. 1-0 Lakeside. Not the best start for Ongar and they could be forgiven for being slightly rusty, after such an enforced period without any competitive football but they quickly got into their stride and started to play their attacking brand of football. The equaliser came after 15 minutes.

With Ongar’s midfield very impressive in their attitude, looking hungry for work and also with previous club captain Albert Amass returning to the club after a season away, they won the ball back high up the pitch via a crunching Amass tackle, which presented Blair with an opportunity to curl the ball into the bottom corner of the Lakeside goal. Brilliant goal and excellent reply to the early setback. 1-1.

Town’s pressure grew and grew as the first half progressed and they created four more good opportunities to take the lead, via the excellent Jack Zielinski returning up front, but sadly couldn’t add to their tally.

HT 1-1.

Ongar started the 2nd half in full flow, pushing the home side deep into their half and keeping them there for long periods and surely only a matter of time before their control of the game was rewarded..

Up step midfielder Mitchell McCabe to crash a fantastic finish into the bottom corner of the Lakeside net after 70 mins to give Ongar a deserved lead after all their pressure.

Further chances were created but wasted by the away side to finish the tie off sooner, but this game was never in doubt as Ongar thoroughly deserved their win with a powerful, dominant performance controlling the game from the minute they went behind and all the more impressive having not kicked a ball in so long also.

Very happy manager post match, clearly looking forward upcoming Quarter Final live draw on BBC Essex FM Radio!!
