Runwell Sports FC 2 v 4 Ongar Town

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

Ongar Town FC started their new campaign of the 2019/20 season with a difficult trip away to Runwell Sports on a very hot Saturday late in August. Runwell, boasting a good recent home record and keen to make an instant impact on the league after gaining promotion from EOFL Division 2 last season came out of the blocks early against a very young Ongar team, also relatively new to the division.

Fairly even first 15 mins but then Joe Lilly curled in a delightful freekick from wide of the penalty area into the far top corner.. 1 nil Ongar 20 minutes in.

It was 2 nil 5 minutes later when Harry Rawlins placed his 1st goal of the season under the home keeper after good counter attacking football by the away side.. 2 nil became 3 nil five minutes later when Rawlins got his second of the game with another slick finish past the advancing home keeper.. Half time, 3 nil to the away side and looking strong.

Second half started in dynamic fashion with Runwell scoring within a minute of the restart, even after the warning from Ongar’s Manager about what was to come from the home side.. Long ball forward not dealt with correctly allowing a simple finish to make it 3-1 and give the home side renewed vigour.

10 minutes later Runwell caught the away side out again, this time Chadwick failing to deal with a bouncing ball on the edge of his own area, a mix up between the defence and Runwell nicking another soft goal..

The away team made a couple of changes to breath new life into themselves and with the home team pushing forward, creating more spaces for Ongar on the break, the away team got the decisive fourth goal of the game with the impressive Josh Boxall cutting in from the left hand side across the penalty area and smashing a brilliant strike into the far top corner, excellent goal from one of Ongar’s top performers on the day!

Ongar even had time to miss a penalty in last few minutes of the game with Lilly smashing his shot against a post and away..

All in all, a good first game of season and 3 valuable points for the Ongar!!
